This machine needed a lot of work and tweaking. My recommendation is that if you had some more money, get a better machine to have a peace of mind about the hardware. The linear sliding shaft are somewhat flimsy and won’t be able to mill aluminum correctly. Inlays using CNC 3018 and Fusion 360 darkforce 1 darkforce Tele-Meister Joined Posts 182 Location Germany Since the 3018 and similar CNC routers are quite cheap I thought it might be interesting to show my workflow for creating fretboard inlays. To conclude: this machine did OK job for beginners who wanted to learn CAM but not for heavy duty uses or aluminum milling as advertised. The 3D carving test were also successful. Fusion 360 is pretty easy to use and free for hobbyist and definitely has 3D capabilities. That’s why I had to use AutoDesk Fusion 360 to generate the tooth-paths and G-code for a simple design of 3D smiley face. The thing I was most interested about was 3D carving. Use simplified controls for high-efficiency roughing, adaptive clearing, and tool orientation. My first test run with a 2D smiley face using Easel from Inventables as G-code generator was successful. Fusion 360 makes it easy to program CNC machines. The machine came to me per-assembled but I needed to do a lot of tightening. It’s an used 3018 wood carving machine (small and light duty). I just bought my first CNC machine from eBay. Major Favor: if you make one of these please post the Make and share it with the community :-). While looking for a way to effectively hold down work on my 3018 CNC weturned to Fusion 360 and designed this niffy clamp! It is relatively simple with one fixed end, a slider another movable fixed end which uses three 1/4-20 bolts to put pressure on the slider.
